“A Coach/Mentor”

Coaches for youth basketball play a unique role.  They have an opportunity to have an eternal impact on the lives of children and become a legendary figure when they remember their childhood.  As a coach, you are a key part of the ministry and help provide the best sports experience for each child on your team.  You will receive valuable tools and first class coaching materials to help you along the way.  All coaches receive a coaches manual geared toward each season, information on the coaches section of the Upward website and a coaches shirt to wear on game day.

If you have any additional questions regarding coaching, please contact Jay Barton

(Social Security Number is used for background checks only). Please note that we need a social security number in order to complete a background check. Since this is not a secure form, please contact Wendy Morris at 804-639-2236 after submitting this form.

Coaches must read and affirm by checkbox below the following statement: Parkway Baptist Church – Upward Basketball Coach - Affirmation By completing and submitting an application to coach Upward Basketball at Parkway Baptist Church I am affirming my agreement with the following. The guiding mission of Upward Sports is, “promoting the discovery of Jesus through sports”. This mission is undergirded by the following values; the expectation of God moments, the life of integrity, the opportunity to serve, the discipline of excellence, and the priority of children. As a representative of the sponsoring organization, the coach of any Upward Sports team is the primary communicator of these value propositions and the overall mission of Upward Sports to their team members and families. There is responsibility and honor associated with being a coach in a league such as Upward as you impact the participants in four key areas; * spiritually – by personally, and helping others embrace life’s ultimate purpose * mentally – by demonstrating wise decisions * athletically – by helping to improve physical abilities * socially – by fostering healthy relationships with all those involved in the program. Personal commitment to and communication of these values and principles is necessary. As a volunteer coach in the Upward Basketball program at Parkway Baptist Church I commit to making spiritual development a primary focus of my team. Therefore, winning games as determined by the scoreboard should be minimized in favor of ensuring that each practice and game experience is fun and encouraging for the players and their families. The policy of Parkway Baptist Church is that any adults who are working with children in any capacity must have a personal background check. Therefore, I am agreeing to allow Parkway Baptist Church to perform a personal background check. Our desire is that this coaching experience is rewarding for you as you invest in the lives of these children through the means of basketball. As the values describe, you have a unique opportunity to influence many areas of your team’s personal development. The Parkway Upward leadership team is ready and willing to provide assistance to you in any area that you may need. Please reach out to any of the commissioners or league director and we will get you the resources that you need. I have read and hereby affirm the Upward Basketball Coach Affirmation.

Referee Info

Referees play an important role as on the court coaches to encourage fair play and understanding of the game.  Referees manage the game by both enforcing the rules and encouraging/teaching those players on the court. By enforcing the rules the players will learn the game and gain an understanding of what it takes to make it at the next level of development.  If you are interested in volunteering to referee we will provide training and support.
